Discovering the area between Verbania and Cannobio: a corner of lake and mountain

We discover the last Piedmontese section of Lake Maggiore with what it has to offer.

If you find yourself exploring Lake Maggiore, you cannot miss the beauty hidden along the road that connects Verbania to Cannobio, a route that winds through breathtaking landscapes, picturesque villages and unspoilt nature. This area, which embraces the Piedmont shore of the lake and borders the Ticino, is a real jewel to be discovered, without haste and with the desire to be surprised.

Verbania: the starting point

The journey begins in Verbania, the main town of Verbano, a place worth visiting before setting off. With its lakeside promenade, elegant parks and historic villas, Verbania in itself offers a pleasant introduction to the lake. If you have time, a visit to Villa Taranto is a must: the botanical garden is one of the most beautiful in Italy, a riot of flowers, exotic plants and spectacular views of the lake.

From Verbania, start your journey northwards, skirting the lake and immersing yourself in a landscape that alternates between small coves and mountain views.

Between nature and villages: the stretch of road

As you approach Cannobio, you realise that the route is not just a road to be travelled, but an experience to be lived. On this stretch, the vegetation becomes more lush and the mountains rising on the opposite side of the lake seem closer and closer. Along the way, numerous small villages and hamlets offer opportunities to stop and discover hidden corners.

A small diversions could be to Baveno, which is located right halfway between Verbania and Cannobio. Its Romanesque church and lakeside promenade with views of the Borromean Islands are lovely places for a quiet stroll. Don't forget to stop at the pier to admire the unique view of the lake, especially at sunset, when the colours reflect on the water. The “district” of Feriolo is also an excellent stop. There is a beautiful beach here and the view of the village, coming from the south, is postcard-perfect.

Cannero Riviera: the picture-postcard village

Just before arriving in Cannobio, another unmissable stop is Cannero Riviera, a village that looks like something out of a postcard. Here, the lake is particularly serene and peaceful, with its crystal-clear waters and historic villas overlooking the water. The castle of Cannero, located on a small island, is one of the symbols of the village and well worth a visit, even if only to admire it from afar as you sail on the lake.

Cannobio: the Ticino border

And finally you come to Cannobio, the last pearl of this part of Lake Maggiore. Once known as an ancient fishing village, Cannobio is now a popular destination for those seeking tranquillity and natural beauty. The historic centre, with its cobbled lanes and small squares, is perfect for a stroll among the typical shops and outdoor cafés. Don't miss a visit to the Santuario della Pietà, one of the most significant places of worship in the area.

From Cannobio, the border with Ticino is just a stone's throw away, so if you have time, you might as well pop over to Switzerland, exploring the Swiss side of the lake.

A journey that unites

The stretch between Verbania and Cannobio is perfect for those who like to alternate moments of relaxation and discovery with a dash of adventure. The natural beauty, the tranquillity of the lake and the authenticity of the small villages create a mix that always leaves its mark. If you are looking for a corner of the world where time seems to slow down and every glimpse is a photo opportunity, this area of Lake Maggiore is the right place for you.
